CHaRA was started by Carol and Ron McDonald in 2006. Ron and Carol started their mission work in Romania and The Republic of Moldova 1996-1999. It became their passion to work in villages among those in need. In 1999 they took their first trip to Africa. They lived and worked 7 years 1999-2006 in Tanzania East Africa as part of a mission organization: building, training and helping people.
Now they are working as CHaRA Construction Health and Relief Acts, a 501(c3) non profit organization. Working together with the local people, missionaries and the government to build schools, facilitate health clinics, provide training and clean birth kits to midwives, give mosquito nets, help with community relief and development activities. CHaRA sends a 40′ container each year filled with donated medical equipment and supplies to the Zanzibar Islands. They partnered with TOMS Shoes to provide 512,000 pairs of shoes plus hundreds of flip flops in the schools of Zanzibar.
It was our joy and pleasure to work with the people of Zanzibar Tanzania to help alleviate poverty and sickness for 10 years.
Now CHARA continues helping midwives on Zanzibar through education and giving clean birth kits. The office is now on the mainland of Tanzania. They are building the Love and Joy Center in Dongobesh. It will be a lifelong project caring for mothers and babies while sharing the Light of God.
Letter from the Founders
What we have discovered in Tanzania are kind and hard working people who live in poverty with deadly water conditions and suffering from many diseases. We have found malaria to be the number one killer of children under 5 and that all areas of life are affected by this parasite. We discovered hospitals with lack of basic equipment and supplies to care for their people. We discovered children are sent from age 4 to fetch water, mainly little girls that many times are molested and most times never attend school. We see HIV/AIDS killing parents and leaving millions of orphans. We have found 1 of 5 babies die at birth and many of these deaths can be stopped by the purchase of a small clean birthing kit.
All of these things creating the cycle of poverty and a people without hope. If we can come along side of the Tanzanians and help provide basic health care, malaria prevention training with nets to protect their families, enhance the hospital equipment, provide water sources, build schools, build orphan homes, sponsor orphans, make a way for girls to attend school, educate in all areas including health issues we can help to save lives and alleviate poverty. If we can share our love and compassion with those in need we can bring hope.
There is so much to be done, the need for water and health issues are enormous. Schools to educate the young and homes for orphans are in great demand. Please find out how you can support vital projects of CHaRA. As stewards of your hard earned giving we will continue working to improve the lives of the people in Tanzania East Africa. On behalf of CHaRA we want to say thank you. We appreciate the support of our donors and those who go with us. After MANY years of being in this country we have seen things change for good in the country. We’re excited and honored to continue being part of this great transformation.
“Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land.” Join us and experience the joy!
Ron and Carol McDonald
Our mission is to improve the lives of the people of East Africa through good health, safe water, education, care of orphans, and the love of God. Our passion is to bring life, hope, and joy to those in need through acts of love and compassion. Our vision is to see the bonds of poverty broken, infant mortality rates reduced, children educated and in good health as we partner with the people of Tanzania and those who give for the mission to be fulfilled.
Living Out Our Mission
Chara is a Greek word for joy and gladness. We find that in giving we have reason to rejoice and the people we touch find hope, life and joy. There are few greater pleasures than the sounds of laughter, to see a sad child smile and find joy in the day because you are there. Taking a child from the ground to sit them in a wheelchair or PET cart brings a ray of sunshine from the smiles of both child and parent. Another is to see the smile of a mother at the end of a clinic knowing her child is well or on the way to being well because we were there. Knowing you have helped save the life of a mother and her baby with a clean birthing kit brings great joy. Every Mother wants to have healthy happy babies and we want that to be a reality for the people we serve.
We’re presently working in East Africa in the country of Tanzania: Zanzibar. There are 120 tribes in Tanzania, with a population of 51 million people. Most of the tribes are of Bantu origin and they speak Kiswahili. Zanzibar is a predominately Islamic Island with a population over one million. Zanzibar is made up of three Islands Unguja 1,666 Sq. Km. and Pemba 988 Sq.Km. and the small Island of Tumbatu. There are two rainy seasons they call the long rains March through May and the short rains October through December. Tanzania is the 24th poorest country in the world with a life expectancy of 62.2 years. 1 in 6 babies die at birth. The needs are many; malaria, HIV/Aids, typhoid, cholera, hunger, poor water, orphans, poverty and sickness abound. We have seen movements in every statistic over the past 17 years. We are making a difference!
In the words of Dr. Mabody, “change will come through faith based organizations like CHaRA” and the people who support CHaRA. With your help CHaRA can make a difference in Tanzania.
